Round Diamonds

The round brilliant is cut to return the most light of any diamond shape. It is the classic engagement diamond, and the most versatile.

Choosing a round diamond

What makes a round brilliant

A round brilliant has 57 or 58 facets arranged so that light entering the top is reflected back out through it. No other shape is cut so precisely for brilliance and fire, which is why it remains the most chosen engagement diamond.

How to choose one

Cut matters most. An Excellent or Ideal cut grade gives the most sparkle and can make a diamond look brighter than a larger stone cut poorly. Because a well-cut round hides small inclusions and a hint of colour so well, you can often choose a slightly lower colour or clarity grade without seeing a difference.

Settings that suit it

A round diamond suits every style: solitaire, halo, pavé, three-stone, bezel and swirl. Most DANHOV engagement rings are designed around a round centre stone.

Round diamond questions

Why do round diamonds cost more per carat?

Cutting a round brilliant from a rough crystal loses more of the rough than most other shapes, so a round of the same carat weight usually costs more than a fancy shape.

Is a lab-grown round diamond a real diamond?

Yes. A lab-grown diamond is real diamond, with the same chemical, physical and optical properties as a natural one. It is grown in a laboratory rather than mined, and usually costs less.
