You have found the ring; now you need the size, without spoiling the surprise. Here are seven discreet ways to find it, and what to do if you are still not sure.
1. Borrow a ring she already wears
Take a ring she wears on her ring finger (the fourth finger of the left hand in most countries) and measure its inside diameter in millimetres, then match it on our ring size chart. A jeweller can also size it in seconds. Return it before she notices.
2. Trace or press it
If you cannot take the ring away, trace its inside on paper, or press it gently into a bar of soap or a piece of modelling clay to keep an impression.
3. Slide it onto your own finger
Slide one of her rings onto your finger and mark how far it goes with a pen. A jeweller can measure your finger at that point.
4. Ask a friend or family member
Her best friend, sister or mother may know her size, or can find out without raising suspicion, for example by trying on rings together.
5. Make it part of a conversation
A friend shopping for their own ring, or a gift you are "thinking of" for her mother, can be a natural way to bring sizes up.
6. Check her jewellery box or receipts
Ring boxes, receipts and online orders sometimes show a size.
7. Measure while she sleeps
Only for the brave: wrap a thin strip of paper or string around the base of her ring finger, mark it, and measure the length against our size guide.
If you are not sure, go slightly larger
A ring a little too large can be worn safely until it is resized; a ring too small will not fit at all. Fingers are also larger in warm weather and later in the day. Note that wide bands fit more snugly than narrow ones.
Resizing at DANHOV
One complimentary resize, one size up or down, is included within 60 days of delivery on most DANHOV rings. Some designs can only be adjusted a little, and tension rings cannot be resized, so for those it is worth being sure. Read the details in our shipping and returns policy, or book a consultation and we will help.
