Choosing a pear diamond
The teardrop
A pear is a brilliant cut, so it sparkles brightly, and its elongated shape makes it look generous for its weight and lengthens the finger. It is traditionally worn with the point toward the fingertip.
How to choose one
Look for good symmetry: the two sides should mirror each other and the rounded end should not look flat. A ratio of about 1.45 to 1.75 is most popular. Like ovals, pears can show a bow-tie; choose one where it is soft.
Settings that suit it
A prong or bezel at the point protects it. Pears are lovely in a halo, in a bezel, or with a pair of side stones.
