Tension Set Engagement Rings: How They Work and Are They Safe?

A tension set engagement ring holds its diamond without prongs or a bezel. The stone sits between the two ends of the band, held by the pressure of the metal itself, so it seems to float. It is one of the most striking, modern ways to set a diamond, and DANHOV has made tension rings for decades in our Voltaggio collection.

How a tension setting works

The band is made of metal hardened so that it behaves like a spring. A jeweller cuts tiny, precise grooves into the ends of the band and, by opening the band slightly, sets the diamond into those grooves. As the band closes, its spring pressure holds the stone firmly in place. Because nothing covers the diamond from above or below, light reaches it from every side.

Many rings described as "tension style" actually hold the stone with hidden prongs or a partial bezel. A true tension setting relies on the pressure of the metal and needs exact engineering and finishing by hand.

Is a tension set ring secure?

A well-made tension ring, from the right metal and to exact tolerances, holds its diamond securely in everyday wear. Diamond is the hardest natural material, which is why it can be held this way. As with any ring, a very hard knock can damage it, so take it off for heavy work and have it checked by a jeweller periodically.

What to know before you choose

  • Sizing. Because the band's tension holds the stone, tension rings generally cannot be resized after they are made, so we make yours to your exact size. Find it with our ring size guide.
  • Diamond. Tension settings show the whole diamond, so choose good cut and clarity.
  • Wedding band. Choose a band designed to sit beside a tension ring; ask us and we will advise.

Questions

Can a diamond fall out of a tension ring?

A well-made tension ring holds its diamond securely in everyday wear. As with any ring, a very hard impact can damage it, so remove it for heavy work and have it checked periodically.

Can tension rings be resized?

Generally not, because the band's tension holds the stone. Tension rings are made to the wearer's exact size.
