Your engagement ring and wedding band will be worn together for a lifetime, so they should look and feel like a pair. Here is how to choose a band that suits your ring.
Start with how they sit together
Put the two rings side by side and look at the gap. Many engagement rings have a centre stone or halo that sits low, leaving a gap beside a straight band. You have three options:
- A matching band designed for your ring, which follows its exact shape.
- A curved or contour band that bends around the centre stone so the rings sit flush.
- A straight band with a gap, which some people prefer as a clean, modern look.
Match the metal
Choose the same metal as your engagement ring so they wear evenly and their colours match. Mixing metals, such as a yellow gold band beside a platinum ring, can be beautiful when it is intentional. Read platinum vs gold to compare.
Balance the width and detail
A band of similar width to your engagement ring's shank usually looks most balanced. A delicate pavé engagement ring pairs well with a fine diamond band; a bold or detailed ring often looks best beside a simple plain band, so the ring stays the focus.
Think about the future
Some people add bands over the years, for anniversaries or births. If you might, choose a band that will also stack well with a second one.
